Understanding Predator Psychopaths

The word “psychopath” can be first found in the mid 19th Century. It is derived from the Greek language in the words “psyche” and “pathos”, which mean “sick mind” or “suffering soul.” If you ask, “what is a psychopath” you will probably hear answer along these lines. They are loners. They have no souls. They have no empathy for people. They prey on the weak. They don’t mix well with others. Yet, many psychopaths live intertwined within our lives. A psychopath can be a close friend, boss, or even a spouse. Psychopaths are people whose only goal is to take advantage of others; they have no empathy, remorse, or feelings for their victims.

In today’s environment, shootings with multiple casualties have become more prominent. A scary reality is that any of us could have been in a location where one of these seemingly random shootings occurred.

According to the Hare Psychopathy checklist, the following traits are common among Psychopathic personalities.

  • pathological lying
  • glib and superficial charm
  • grandiose sense of self
  • need for stimulation
  • cunning and manipulative
  • lack of remorse or guilt
  • shallow emotional response
  • callousness and lack of empathy
  • parasitic lifestyle
  • poor behavioral controls
  • sexual promiscuity
  • early behavior problems
  • lack of realistic long-term goals
  • impulsivity
  • irresponsibility
  • failure to accept responsibility
  • many short-term marital relationships
  • juvenile delinquency
  • revocation of conditional release
  • criminal versatility

It is very important to be able to identify a person with a psychopathic personality. You life could depend on it. They can be very charming and personable. They can easily lure you into their web of deceit and lies to which there may not be an escape.

Please remember: Diagnosing a psychopath is best left to professional diagnosis. Just because you think someone exhibits some or all of these behaviors may or may not necessarily mean they are psychopathic, but it should be a red flag that you could be dealing with one.

Your goal should be to be able to understand and identify the psychopath. They can be at your work, on your bowling team, or even your companion or spouse.
