The Liberty First Foundation was founded to protect and defend the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. It is with honor that we strive to protect the document that founded this great nation. This document defines the powers granted government and more importantly the limits to those powers. As defenders of the Second Amendment, we hold the Second Amendment in high regard. We must first and foremost hold the Constitution, in its entirety, in the highest regard. Most importantly, we must consider the Constitutionality of national reciprocity and the Tenth Amendment.
The Liberty First Foundation supports the Second Amendment, as it is written. Believing any restrictions on private ownership of firearms violates the Second Amendment. We do not believe that the answer is in regulating guns. We believe in holding gun-owners accountable for their actions. If gun-owners are to be held accountable for their actions, consequentially, government should be held accountable for theirs.
The United States was founded on the principle, the Federal Government has the least amount of power. Government is held accountable in the use of restricted powers granted to them. These powers were not granted by birthright or from proclamation, we the people grant them. We determine who is allowed this power when we elect the individuals representing us.
Many of question that those chosen to represent us exceed the power granted to them through the various laws they want to pass. The laws that concern us the most are laws that pertain to gun-rights. We cry out about the unconstitutionality of new laws restricting magazine capacity, or a specific class of firearm. However, we are pushing for laws that are as damaging to the Constitution as the laws that restrict gun-rights.
I know you are asking, “What are you talking about we all support the Constitution. We believe that the Constitution should be upheld at all costs”. The legislation that I refer to is national reciprocity. Forcing all states to recognize rights granted in one state as valid in all states.
I know that some of you are already saying, “How can you be a supporter of the Second Amendment and not demand national reciprocity legislation”? The reason I cannot support national reciprocity is that such legislation would be a violation of the Constitution. Legislation that would require states abide with national reciprocity laws exceed the limitations placed upon the Federal Government.
The Tenth Amendment
The Tenth Amendment of the Constitution states,
“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
Laws enacted by the Federal Government for national reciprocity violates this amendment and is a violation of State Rights. In order for me to identify as a defender of the Second Amendment I must take a stand against any legislation calling for national reciprocity, enacted and enforced by the Federal Government. To do otherwise would lack integrity.
As one of the leaders for the Liberty First Foundation, I must have integrity. Integrity demands that I not be hypocritical about my principles and values. A huge part of my principals rests in the principals established in the Constitution. How can I call myself a person if integrity cherry picking the parts of the Constitution that I choose to support? The fact of the matter is I can’t. I can’t say that I support the Second Amendment and then disregard the Tenth Amendment. If I want States to recognize the Second Amendment, as it is written, I must recognize the Tenth Amendment. To sum up, I must recognize the Rights granted to the States in it. To do otherwise would lack integrity and how can I expect people to follow a person with a lack of integrity?
